Just How Rare Are Diamonds?

Walking into your local jewelry store and looking at all of the diamond jewelry that is for sale, it is hard to believe that diamonds are a rare item. Many people don’t realize or never take the time to find out how those diamonds got into that jewelry store in the first place. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to bring that diamond to the store for you to purchase.

It takes one million diamonds to be mined before one diamond of the quality that can be used will be found. And that is for a one carat diamond. For a two carat diamond it will take five million diamonds to be mined before one of that size and quality are found. In addition to that staggering number, the ore that must be mined will number in the two hundred ton range for one tiny diamond. Most of the diamonds that are found, as much as eighty percent, are only usable for industrial purposes like the ones that are used on drill bits.
